A judge has ordered Meta to pay $25 billion to the state of New Mexico. This decision follows a two-week trial regarding the company's data privacy practices and its role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
The jury determined that Meta committed 43 million violations of state consumer protection laws. Each violation resulted in a penalty of $5,000, leading to the total fine amount.
The legal proceedings addressed the company's management of third-party applications, its data privacy policies, and its efforts to control misinformation on its platforms.
Meta's Chief Legal Officer, C.J. Mahoney, stated that the company intends to appeal the ruling. He argued that the lawsuit imposes restrictions on online speech and complicates business operations in New Mexico.
