Meta is developing a new high-end mixed reality headset, internally codenamed Phoenix. Files discovered within the Meta Horizon OS firmware reveal that the device features a lightweight, open-frame design that departs from traditional face-covering VR headsets.

The hardware utilizes an external computing module, with a connection cable extending from the end of the left temple. The device includes multiple sensors integrated into the sides and under the temples, along with support for eye-tracking technology that requires a calibration process.

The design incorporates adjustable lens spacing and removable nose pads. Users can install prescription lenses by scanning a QR code associated with the lenses directly through the headset. The system is designed to support controller-free interaction.

Further details regarding the project may emerge during the upcoming Meta Connect 2026 event. The company has scheduled a session focused on practical guides for controller-free interaction, which aligns with the device's emphasis on eye and hand tracking.
