Mercedes-Benz has secured preferential access to the new Gen4 Superfluidized Inorganic Next-Generation Lithium Ceramic Battery cells from ProLogium. The automaker is currently conducting electrical, thermal, and safety evaluations at its own facilities and external institutes to determine the technology's viability for future vehicle models.
The partnership between the two companies dates back to 2016, with Mercedes-Benz becoming a strategic investor in 2022 by contributing a high double-digit million euro amount. The manufacturer also holds a seat on ProLogium's Board of Directors. This collaboration is part of a wider development strategy that includes investments in other solid-state battery firms like Factorial Energy.
ProLogium currently manufactures its cells at the Taoke Gigafactory in Taiwan, which has reached GWh-scale production. The company is also constructing a new facility in Dunkirk, France. The initial phase of the French site targets an annual capacity of 4 GWh by 2030, with long-term plans to scale production up to 44 GWh.
While the tests aim to assess the potential for a European supply chain, no final decision regarding series production or specific vehicle platforms has been reached. ProLogium highlights that its Gen4 technology features non-flammable inorganic electrolytes and ceramic separators, though specific performance metrics remain undisclosed.
