On October 5, 2026, CryptoQuant analyst Darkfost reported that the market share of meme coins within the total altcoin capitalization has dropped to approximately 3%. This represents a record low for the metric, with the current ratio standing at 0.027.
The decline is significant compared to November 2024, when the ratio exceeded 10%. By July 2026, the figure had fallen to 3.7%, which was the lowest level recorded since February 2024.
Analysts attribute this trend to the superior performance of other altcoins and an oversupply of new meme tokens, which dilutes market liquidity. Additionally, the number of meme coin holders has reached multi-year lows.
Despite the current downturn, historical data suggests potential for recovery. A similar dip to 3.2% in late 2025 was followed by a rebound in early 2026 for tokens such as Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Bonk. However, experts note that current metrics do not guarantee an immediate reversal.
