MegaFon has deployed 5G network coverage at three major railway hubs: the Kievsky and Leningradsky stations in Moscow, and the Moskovsky station in Saint Petersburg. The operator achieved this by upgrading existing LTE infrastructure, utilizing technological neutrality to enable 5G on current frequency resources.
These locations were selected as priority sites due to high user density and network load. According to the operator, passenger traffic at the Kievsky and Leningradsky hubs reaches several hundred thousand people daily. Peak network usage occurs between 15:00 and 20:00, coinciding with the departure of long-distance and commuter trains.
The 5G deployment aims to increase data transfer speeds and reduce latency for passengers using video calls, cloud services, and high-bandwidth applications. MegaFon notes that traffic levels at these transit hubs remain consistently high throughout both weekdays and weekends, unlike in residential or business districts.
Access to the 5G network is available to users with compatible smartphones. For devices lacking native 5G support, including iPhone models, the operator provides a Mega5G option. This network setting allows users to achieve data speeds comparable to 5G performance levels.
Data analysis indicates that these stations serve a diverse passenger base, including travelers from the Tver, Novgorod, Murmansk, Samara, and Nizhny Novgorod regions, as well as Karelia. International visitors from China, Turkey, and the UAE are also among the frequent users of these transit hubs.
