Mechanism has launched the Basecase for the Switch 2, a modular snap-on protective shell priced at $49. The product integrates with the company's existing ecosystem of mounts, including the $19 Basegrip, allowing users to attach the console to various surfaces like monitors or walls.
The case features a modular design with a swappable rear plate, enabling users to attach custom 3D-printed components such as Lego-compatible surfaces or game cartridge holders. The Joy-Con protectors also include interchangeable grips in two sizes to improve ergonomics and provide storage for physical game cartridges.
The design includes a secure clamping mechanism near the USB-C port to ensure a snug fit. To accommodate docking, the package includes a female-to-male USB-C cable adapter, as the case prevents the console from fitting into the standard dock. Third-party docks from Jsaux or Genki do not require this adapter.
Mechanism provides 3D printer files for custom parts on platforms like Makerworld and Printables. The case design incorporates specific safety features, such as rubber lips on the Joy-Con grips, to prevent the console from slipping out of the protectors during handling.
