Vintage Emulator Studio uses MAME to perform full component-level emulation of 44 legendary synthesizers. This approach reproduces each processor, tone generator, envelope generator, filter chip, and converter, aiming for high sound accuracy. For machines with more advanced MAME emulation, analog and digital output stages are also recreated, removing the need for additional filters.

The software features a skeuomorphic, HiDPI-ready UI that replicates the original hardware's control panels, dials, and LCD displays. It also includes emulation of floppy disks, CD-ROMs, and peripherals. The plugin is available in VST3 and AU formats, as well as a standalone application, for Windows, macOS (Intel and M-series), and Linux.

Users must provide their own ROMs, firmware, and associated sample packs. The CPU usage is expected to be high due to the same level of detailed simulation. The accuracy of emulation varies by instrument, as some drivers, such as the Akai MPC-3000, are nearly complete, while others, like the Prophet-5, were added to MAME more recently.
