The VMware competency center team highlights that maintaining critical infrastructure requires more than just a 'don't touch it if it works' approach. Risks often accumulate silently over time, leading to potential system failures or complete outages.
Common issues include expired certificates, full file systems, and time synchronization errors. Human error also plays a significant role, such as forgetting to re-enable high availability (HA) settings or failing to document cluster configuration changes.
According to the team, which cites over 30 years of IT service experience, major incidents rarely occur suddenly. They are typically preceded by minor, long-term deviations that remain unnoticed until they reach a critical threshold.
To mitigate these risks, the team suggests regular audits. Rather than being a formality, audits serve as a proactive tool to identify early warning signs of future technical problems before they impact infrastructure stability.
