Lotus is developing a new mid-engined sports car, internally designated as Type 135, with a scheduled debut in 2028. The model will feature a V6 or V8 hybrid powertrain, an 800-volt electrical architecture, and is expected to deliver over 1,000 horsepower in its V8 configuration.
The company aims to keep the vehicle weight at approximately 1.5 metric tons. To achieve this, Lotus is utilizing Formula 1 technology to reduce the mass of its 150-kilowatt electric motor to 20 kg, compared to the industry standard of 75–95 kg.
Lotus is co-developing an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and the high-performance powertrain with Horse, leveraging Geely's supply chain and resources. This strategy allows Lotus to focus on its core competencies: lightweight construction, aerodynamics, and chassis tuning.
The Type 135 will be positioned between the Emira and the Evija in the company's lineup and will include a GT3 race car variant. This project is part of a broader multi-powertrain strategy that incorporates combustion engines, hybrids, and pure electric vehicles.
