The Linux kernel development team has released the second release candidate, Linux 7.3-rc2. Following the closure of the merge window, the project has transitioned from integrating new features to focusing on bug fixes and system stability. Unlike typical rc2 cycles, which are usually quiet, this version maintains a high level of activity due to a continuous influx of code submissions.

Key updates in this release include optimizations for cache-aware scheduling on hybrid architecture processors to improve task efficiency. The team also performed extensive code cleanup in the memory management subsystem, migrating numerous kmalloc calls to the kmalloc_obj interface. Additionally, the Nouveau driver received fixes for NVIDIA Blackwell architecture GPUs.

Security and language support adjustments include disabling the RandStruct mechanism by default when Rust kernel support is active to prevent compatibility issues. The release also incorporates late updates to the EDAC subsystem. Meanwhile, developer Greg Kroah-Hartman has noted that the rise of AI-generated code is increasing the burden on code review and maintenance processes.

The development team plans to continue releasing further candidates over the coming weeks to ensure stability. The final stable release of Linux 7.3 is currently scheduled for the second half of October.
