LG Energy Solution is set to supply Mercedes-Benz with a new type of cylindrical battery cell, the 46100 format. These cells measure 46 millimeters in diameter and 100 millimeters in height. The supplier plans to initiate production line preparations in 2025, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2028.

The manufacturing process for the 46100 cells is expected to begin at the LG Energy Solution facility in Wrocław, Poland. The company is also reportedly evaluating investments in module assembly infrastructure to integrate these cells. Additionally, LG Energy Solution is preparing a dedicated facility in Ochang to adapt the technology for mass production.

The 46-series battery portfolio from LG Energy Solution already includes formats such as 4680, 4695, and 46120. Production of 4695 cells commenced at the Ochang plant in late 2023, while the company has planned production of various 46-series cells at its Arizona site. The 46100 format represents a new addition to this lineup.

Mercedes-Benz continues to diversify its battery supplier network. Since October 2024, the automaker has finalized four long-term supply agreements with LG Energy Solution. The company also maintains battery supply contracts with Samsung SDI, signed in April, and works with partners including CATL, SK On, and Farasis.
