Warren Buffett has officially stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, transitioning to the role of chairman emeritus. Greg Abel, who previously oversaw non-insurance operations and led Berkshire Hathaway Energy, has assumed full operational control of the conglomerate as of January 1, 2026.

The leadership transition was first announced at the annual shareholder meeting on May 3, 2025. Buffett’s retirement became effective on December 31, 2025. Since taking control in 1965, Buffett oversaw growth that pushed the company’s valuation to approximately $1 trillion, with Class A shares delivering cumulative returns exceeding 5.5 million percent.

Under new leadership, Greg Abel has begun adjusting the company's portfolio. This includes increasing investments in Alphabet and selling off various existing holdings. Furthermore, Berkshire Hathaway completed the acquisition of homebuilder Taylor Morrison for an equity value of approximately $6.8 billion.

Buffett has committed to donating nearly all of his Berkshire shares, currently valued at over $140 billion, to family foundations by the end of 2034. This long-term philanthropic plan will result in a steady supply of shares entering the market over the next decade, which may influence future stock dynamics.
