Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, a conglomerate he led for over six decades. He announced the transition in a letter to investors on Friday, confirming that his son, Howard Buffett, has assumed the role of chairman effective immediately. Warren Buffett will remain on the company's board as honorary chairman.

Howard Buffett, known as Howie, has served on the Berkshire board since 1993. The 71-year-old executive has been involved with the company for over three decades. Warren Buffett stated that he trusts his children and has been preparing Howard for this succession for a long time.

This leadership change follows Warren Buffett's departure from the CEO position at the end of last year. Greg Abel, who previously managed the group's non-insurance operations, succeeded him as CEO. Warren Buffett cited his advancing age and declining physical health as the primary reasons for his gradual withdrawal from active management.

Berkshire Hathaway now operates across insurance, railway, energy, and manufacturing sectors, while maintaining a significant portfolio of public stocks. The company originally began as a textile mill, but that business was closed in 1985. The conglomerate has since grown into a massive enterprise under Buffett's leadership.
