Warren Buffett has transitioned to the role of chairman emeritus following his 96th birthday. The company cited the strong performance of CEO Greg Abel, which surpassed expectations, as a primary reason for the timing of this leadership change.
Howard Buffett, the son of Warren Buffett, has been appointed as the new chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. He has served as a director at the company since 1993 and currently leads the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. His election follows the organization's established succession plan.
Greg Abel, who previously served as vice chairman of non-insurance operations, officially assumed the roles of president and CEO on January 1, 2026. The board of directors voted unanimously to confirm these appointments following a recommendation made in May 2025.
The company leadership emphasized a clear division of responsibilities under the new structure. Greg Abel will continue to manage daily operations, while Howard Buffett is tasked with preserving the corporate culture and values that define Berkshire Hathaway.
