A Reddit user successfully increased the power limit of a laptop-grade RTX 5070 Ti graphics card from 140W to 160W. The modification involved flashing a custom VBIOS and locking the voltage curve, bypassing the factory-set power constraints without modifying the shunt resistors.
The experiment was conducted on a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 Gen 10 gaming laptop, which originally supported a base graphics power of 115W plus 25W from NVIDIA Dynamic Boost. The user utilized the 616.92 driver version to implement these changes and adjust the power management strategy.
Following the modification, the graphics card achieved a score of 4,839 points in the 3DMark Steel Nomad benchmark. This result represents a 16% performance increase compared to the previous best score recorded for the same GPU model by Jarrod’s Tech.
The tools required for this modification have been published on GitHub. However, experts warn that hardware designs vary significantly between laptop models. Differences in PCB layout and VRM specifications mean that such modifications carry risks and are not recommended for average users.
