The Kolkata Police department in West Bengal, India, is expanding its fleet with 183 electric motorcycles. The force has already received the first 60 units, with the remaining 123 expected to follow. This initiative represents one of the largest electric motorcycle deployments for a police force in the country.
The motorcycles will be used primarily for the 112 Emergency Response Support System. Commissioner Ajay Nand noted that the department is also considering the future addition of electric cars to its fleet. The bikes are supplied by the Bengaluru-based startup Ultraviolette Automotive.
The police are receiving a custom version of the X-47 adventure tourer called Skyforce. This variant features specialized equipment, including sirens, LED blinkers, a public address system, walkie-talkie holders, and side panniers, alongside unique decals to distinguish them from standard consumer models.
The Skyforce configuration is based on the entry-level X-47 model, which features a 27 kW motor with 90 Nm of torque and a 7.1 kWh battery. According to the Indian Driving Cycle, the bike achieves a top speed of 145 km/h, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, and offers a range of 211 km on a single charge.
Ultraviolette CEO Narayan Subramaniam stated that this delivery marks the first time the company has supplied its motorcycles to a police force at this scale. Commissioner Ajay Nand emphasized that the transition to electric mobility is intended to improve operational effectiveness, patrolling, and rapid response capabilities.
