A Keurig smart coffee machine recently generated over 1TB of data traffic in just 10 days. The anomaly was identified by an IT professional monitoring his parents' home network via a UniFi management system, which showed the device nearly saturating a wireless access point.
The coffee machine also downloaded approximately 10GB of data during the same period. While the owner noted that most of the traffic remained within the local area network, the exact nature of the data remains unknown as no deep packet inspection was performed.
The owner chose to disconnect the device and replace it rather than troubleshoot the potential software bug. Keurig smart machines typically use internet connectivity for remote brewing, online capsule purchases, and subscription management, none of which account for such high data usage.
This incident highlights broader security concerns regarding the Internet of Things (IoT). Experts warn that manufacturers often prioritize feature development over long-term security, leaving devices vulnerable to hacks or functional failure if software support is discontinued.
