The KDE project has officially released Plasma 6.8, introducing a range of performance and interface enhancements. This version features a new system monitoring tool, improved accessibility options, and further development of the Union theming engine, which aims to unify the appearance of Qt Widgets applications with standard KDE themes.

The update introduces window rules that allow users to apply rounded corners, shadows, and outlines to client-side-decorated applications. These adjustments help maintain visual consistency for software that does not natively support KDE themes. Additionally, the developers have refined the handling of misbehaving app windows.

Technical improvements include full adoption of Wayland, while maintaining compatibility with X11 applications via XWayland. The update also reduces memory usage and improves loading speeds. For users with NVIDIA GPUs, KWin now enables triple buffering by default to enhance performance.

The release also addresses under-the-hood refinements for HDR and ICC profile management. These changes are designed to improve the visual quality of HDR content when utilizing ICC profiles, ensuring more accurate color representation across the desktop environment.
