The KDE Plasma 6.8 desktop environment has been officially released, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the KDE project. The most significant change in this version is the complete removal of support for X11 sessions, marking a full transition to Wayland.
Despite the removal of X11 sessions, software based on X11 will continue to function through the XWayland compatibility layer. KDE applications will maintain support for X11 for the foreseeable future.
The update introduces the Union theme system, which has now entered its beta phase. This system aims to provide a unified approach to managing application styles, ensuring a consistent look across different software.
Additional improvements include updates to remote desktop functionality, bidirectional clipboard support, and the default activation of triple buffering. New keyboard shortcuts have been added for window management, allowing users to switch between tasks in the task manager using Meta plus Ctrl plus Page Up or Page Down.
