The KDE community has officially released the Plasma 6.8 desktop environment. This update introduces refined window decoration rules, allowing applications that draw their own borders to maintain consistent styling through added rounded corners, shadows, and strokes. Additionally, the project continues to develop the Union theme engine, which aims to support Qt Widgets while maintaining standard visual aesthetics.
Performance optimizations are a core focus of this release, with KDE reporting reduced memory consumption and faster loading times. For users with NVIDIA graphics hardware, the KWin window manager now enables triple buffering by default. The update also includes significant improvements to the underlying handling of HDR and ICC color profiles, resulting in more accurate content rendering.
Accessibility features and new system monitoring tools have been added to the desktop environment. KDE has fully transitioned to Wayland while maintaining compatibility with X11 applications via XWayland. Although the Steam Deck uses KDE Plasma, the developers noted that these specific performance and display updates are currently part of the general Plasma 6.8 release, with no specific Steam Deck adaptations confirmed.
