JLR is developing its first fully electric SUV under the Defender brand, currently referred to as the Defender Sport EV. The vehicle is expected to make its official debut by the end of 2026, with a market launch projected for 2027. Prototypes of the compact off-roader have recently been spotted undergoing testing at the Nürburgring circuit.
The new model will be the first to utilize JLR’s EMA platform, which is designed to support both electric and hybrid powertrains. The architecture features 800V fast-charging capabilities and is expected to accommodate battery packs between 70 and 90 kWh. These specifications are projected to deliver a driving range of at least 300 to 320 miles.
The electric SUV will retain a boxy design and include a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system alongside the proprietary Terrain Response technology. Inside, the vehicle will feature a new user interface and larger display screens compared to the standard Defender. The model is intended to be positioned below the current entry-level Defender SUV in terms of pricing.
The expansion of the Defender brand is a key component of JLR’s growth strategy for the US market. CEO PB Balaji stated in June that the company aims to scale its US operations to match the size of its current global business. Additionally, JLR has entered a partnership with Stellantis to explore the potential development and production of vehicles for the US.
