Jane Street Group has entered the market for providing swap agreements to leveraged exchange-traded funds. This move shifts the firm from its traditional role as a liquidity provider and authorized participant into the business of issuing the derivative contracts that underpin these financial products.
Leveraged ETFs rely on total return swaps to achieve their performance targets, such as 2x daily exposure to the S&P 500. Previously, this segment of the market was dominated by major banks and specialized dealers. Jane Street now competes directly with these established financial institutions.
The firm maintains a significant presence in the ETF ecosystem, trading thousands of funds across various asset classes including equities, commodities, and fixed income. It already collaborates with issuers like Leverage Shares, which specializes in leveraged and inverse exchange-traded products.
