JPMorgan Chase & Co. CEO Jamie Dimon stated that the US dollar's status as a reserve currency relies on maintaining a dominant national economy. In a recent interview with Bloomberg and an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal, Dimon emphasized that the US must secure new trade agreements with allies to preserve this economic position.
Dimon highlighted that foreign investors currently hold between $20 trillion and $30 trillion in the United States, with American companies maintaining similar investment levels abroad. He noted that the US currently manages 40 military alliances and 20 active free trade agreements, as confirmed by the Office of the US Trade Representative.
The executive proposed a comprehensive free-trade agreement between the US and Europe, contingent on economic and military reforms. He suggested that such a pact could eventually expand to include Japan, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Australia, and the Philippines, shifting away from current protectionist tariff policies.
While Dimon has historically criticized Bitcoin, his recent commentary links the future of the dollar directly to shifts in national trade policy. Market observers are now monitoring whether the current administration will prioritize these proposed trade agreements over existing tariff-based strategies.
