The mission of the Crew-13 spacecraft to the ISS faces potential delays due to a technical failure. A transporter system used to move the Canadarm2 robotic arm along the station's exterior has jammed, preventing the arm from being relocated.
NASA reports that the issue lies with the transporter mechanism rather than the arm itself. The current position of the robotic arm may interfere with GPS systems and pose a risk to the docking procedures of the upcoming Dragon Crew-13 mission.
The Canadarm2, developed by MDA Space and delivered in 2001, has exceeded its original 15-year service life, having operated for 25 years. NASA has not yet determined if the failure is caused by software or hardware malfunctions.
The robotic arm is essential for docking cargo spacecraft, including Northrop Grumman's Cygnus and Japanese HTV vehicles. While current Dragon ships dock autonomously, the loss of the arm's mobility presents a long-term challenge for station operations.
