The International Space Station has been included in the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize shortlist by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO). Acting director Haakon Gjerløw announced the update, replacing the World Trade Organization with the ISS in the institute's candidate list.

PRIO representatives noted that the station has demonstrated over 25 years of cooperation between geopolitical rivals. The institute believes the award would highlight human achievements in collaborative science despite deteriorating relations on Earth.

The nomination comes as the ISS approaches its decommissioning in the early 2030s. PRIO suggests that recognizing the station could encourage future peaceful cooperation in space, including potential engagement with China and its Tiangong space station.

The announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate is scheduled for October 9, 2026. The official award ceremony will take place in Oslo on December 12, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death.
