Apple is introducing a new Dynamic Island design in iOS 27, specifically for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This update allows the system to display up to three Live Activities simultaneously, such as navigation, food delivery tracking, and sports scores.
To enable this feature, the underlying code requires the sensor area width to be less than 100 layout points, which equals no more than 16.57 mm. Layout points are device-independent units used by Apple to define screen dimensions, scaling according to screen resolution.
Currently, the sensor area width of the iPhone 17 Pro is 20.76 mm. To unlock this software capability, Apple must reduce the hardware size of the sensor area by approximately 20%.
