The Internet Archive has implemented new security measures for its Wayback Machine service following a surge in automated traffic. Director Mark Graham stated that the platform is currently facing waves of bot activity, which necessitated the deployment of protective tools to maintain service stability.

These security protocols have resulted in some legitimate users being blocked from accessing the site. Affected individuals receive a 429 error code, indicating an excessive number of requests. The organization is currently working to improve its ability to distinguish between human users and automated bots.

Users experiencing accidental blocks are encouraged to report the issue via email, providing their operating system, browser details, and IP address. The platform continues to refine its filtering mechanisms to minimize disruptions for regular visitors.

This is not the first time the platform has faced such challenges. In 2023, the Internet Archive went offline after an AI developer sent tens of thousands of requests per second to scrape text data. Consequently, some website owners have begun blocking the Internet Archive entirely to prevent AI bots from harvesting their content.
