Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has been streamlining the company's operations by cutting non-profitable business units and reducing open-source projects to lower costs. The ONE Mono font project, launched by Intel in 2023, was initially targeted for termination as part of this cost-cutting effort.

The font was designed with input from developers with low vision and visual impairments. It features specific adjustments to characters that are often confused, such as lowercase 'e' and uppercase 'G'. The design also increases the height difference between upper and lowercase letters and uses longer ascenders and descenders to improve code readability.

The project saw its last major update in 2024, and repository activity had shifted primarily to README documentation by 2025. Due to a lack of substantial code changes and the departure of maintainers, Intel moved to archive the repository.

However, the company reversed this decision just two days later. The repository is no longer archived, suggesting that Intel intends to keep the project. The company has not provided an official explanation for the reversal or clarified whether active development and maintenance will continue.
