Intel is introducing new VRAM management features to its Xe graphics driver for Linux. The update, expected in Linux 7.4, includes a diagnostic check during initialization to identify memory errors, specifically those related to BAR sizes or CCS metadata misconfiguration, which were previously observed on Battlemage GPUs.
The driver will also implement a mechanism to isolate physically defective VRAM segments. Following 21 revisions, this feature allows the system to permanently mark damaged memory pages as unavailable. This approach prevents applications from accessing faulty sectors, effectively mimicking the bad block management used in storage drives.
By excluding only the corrupted pages, the GPU can remain operational despite a slight reduction in total available memory. This prevents system crashes or complete hardware failure caused by localized memory defects. Currently, these improvements are confirmed only for the Linux driver, with no information regarding a potential release for Windows.
