Bitwise recently published its inaugural report on institutional cryptocurrency adoption, analyzing the behavior of pension funds, endowments, foundations, and sovereign wealth funds. According to Ryan Rasmussen, head of research at Bitwise, none of the 15 major institutions surveyed sold their Bitcoin holdings during the market downturn from $125 000 to $60 000.
The research highlights that many institutions utilized the price drop to increase their positions. These entities increasingly view Bitcoin as a hedge against currency debasement, often holding it alongside gold. Notably, some sovereign wealth funds have begun selling gold reserves to acquire Bitcoin, reflecting a shift in their long-term asset allocation strategies.
Institutional interest is further supported by specific allocation targets. Wells Fargo has reported allocations between 2% and 3%, while other major players like Fidelity and BlackRock see clients targeting ranges of 2% to 8%. The introduction of ETFs has also played a significant role in market stability, with weekly inflows reaching $2,5 billion.
Bitwise analysts suggest that the presence of ETFs has helped mitigate the severity of recent market corrections. The firm maintains that the $60 000 level served as a critical bottom for the asset. Furthermore, the report notes that Bitcoin currently exhibits low correlation with traditional asset classes, including bonds, stocks, and gold.
