The integration of the Sony PS5 HD camera with ROS 2 for visual SLAM requires a specific pipeline, including a camera driver, the image_proc rectification node, and the RTAB-Map package. Proper calibration is essential, as incorrect projection matrix signs in configuration files can lead to negative baseline calculations and system failures.
Common issues during setup include the loss of visual odometry, indicated by a red background in the RTAB-Map interface, and vertical misalignment of stereo frames. These problems often stem from incorrect TF tree configurations, such as redundant static transforms, or failure to use rectified image topics like /left/image_rect and /right/image_rect.
To improve tracking stability, developers can adjust parameters such as Vis/MinInliers, which defaults to 15–20, and use approx_sync_max_interval to handle timing mismatches between stereo frames. Setting Odom/ResetCountdown to 1 allows the system to automatically reinitialize after tracking loss, preventing the odometry from freezing.
Further optimization of map quality involves tuning the frontend and backend of the SLAM process. This includes increasing the maximum number of features to 1500–2000, switching to ORB or SURF descriptors, and applying filters to remove noise from point clouds. Limiting the grid range to 4.0 meters helps mitigate accuracy loss due to the camera's 5.8 cm stereo baseline.
