Hyundai Motor Group has joined a $1 billion funding round for Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a company developing commercial fusion power plants. While the specific investment amount from Hyundai remains undisclosed, the company joins a list of backers that includes Bill Gates.
The partnership involves collaborative engineering efforts focused on the ARC fusion power plant project. Hyundai intends to contribute its expertise in industrial manufacturing, design, and infrastructure development to help scale the fusion technology.
The Commonwealth Fusion Systems project utilizes a compact tokamak design equipped with high-temperature superconducting magnets. The company is currently assembling the SPARC demonstration unit in Massachusetts to validate the technology before proceeding to the commercial ARC plant.
Projections for the ARC facility suggest a fusion power output of approximately 1.1 GW, with a net electrical output of up to 400 MW. The company aims to launch its first commercial power plant in Virginia by the early 2030s, pending successful validation of the technology.
