Huawei has officially launched its new Mate 90 smartphone series, which includes five distinct models: Mate 90, Pro, Pro Max, Pro Max Collector's Edition, and RS Master Edition. A key feature across the entire lineup is the integration of a continuous variable aperture system for the main camera.
The new system allows for smooth aperture adjustment within a range of F/1.4 to F/4.0. This capability provides users with precise optical control, contrasting with the four fixed aperture settings available on the iPhone 18 Pro. The technology enables users to adjust depth of field for portraits and manage exposure transitions during video recording.
In low-light environments, the aperture can open to F/1.4 to improve light intake and reduce noise. Conversely, in bright conditions, it can be stopped down to F/4.0 to prevent overexposure and create starburst effects. This hardware-based approach aims to minimize edge artifacts often associated with software-based bokeh.
The series also introduces the third-generation Red Maple Primary Color Camera. According to Huawei executive Yu Chengdong, this new imaging system is designed to deliver accurate and natural color reproduction across all five models in the series.
