The Center for Digital Technologies for Nature-Climate Projects at HSE University has launched a web application designed to assess the carbon and economic potential of biochar production projects. The tool enables users to estimate carbon credit output, required agricultural land area, investment costs, and overall project viability.
The application is hosted on a digital platform developed by HSE experts with support from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education. It is intended for project developers, investors, and companies in the agricultural and forestry sectors looking to utilize plant residues for biochar production.
Users can input specific project parameters, including project duration, type and volume of raw materials, equipment specifications, and logistics data such as transportation distances for raw materials and finished biochar. The tool also incorporates economic variables like discount rates and inflation levels.
The software allows for the selection of specific carbon credit registries and provides calculations based on various price forecasts. According to Victor Proskuryakov, Deputy Director of the Center, the tool helps determine the scale and duration required to make a project economically attractive.
The results generated by the application are intended for preliminary assessment purposes only. They do not replace formal technical and economic feasibility studies or the official validation procedures required for climate projects.
