HSBC has officially named its upcoming Hong Kong stablecoin as HSBC RedCoin. The bank announced on September 20 that the asset will initially facilitate peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant payments, with plans to expand into corporate and institutional use cases later.
The initiative follows a survey of over 1,000 Hong Kong customers, where 74% identified at least one use case for stablecoins. Respondents linked the assets to digital trading, tokenized investments, and peer-to-peer transfers. HSBC intends to launch educational campaigns regarding redemption and security.
Simultaneously, HSBC UK is collaborating with six other major banks to test tokenized commercial bank money. These pilots, part of the Great British Tokenised Deposit initiative, focus on using programmable payments to enhance settlement efficiency and mitigate transaction risks.
