HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies have conducted a technical trial of a system allowing AI agents to perform micropayments. The test utilized HSBC’s Tokenised Deposit Service alongside Ant Digital’s Anvita Flow network and the Jovay Testnet, a layer-2 blockchain environment.

The demonstration focused on AI agents discovering digital services and executing payments with real-time settlement and risk assessments. The companies defined these transactions as micropayments, typically involving amounts under $2.

The trial served as a technical verification and does not constitute a commercial launch or a live customer product. HSBC joins other financial institutions, including Santander, Sygnum, and CaixaBank, in exploring AI-initiated financial transactions.

Industry perspectives on the integration of AI into banking vary. While some firms like Citrini Research suggest that blockchain infrastructure is necessary to support autonomous AI agents, others argue that traditional banking systems may struggle to adapt to automated, 24/7 operations.
