According to a PYMNTS Intelligence report, approximately 70% of millennials lived paycheck to paycheck between 2020 and 2025, with the figure at 69% in January 2026. Financial constraints are significant, as over one-third of this generation holds less than $1,000 in readily available savings, and 13% have no savings at all.
Income structures among millennials are diverse: 42% rely on fixed salaries, 40% on hourly wages, and the remainder on contract or gig work. This irregularity drives demand for faster payment cycles. In November 2025, 56% of millennials chose instant disbursement options when available, while 14% used them due to a lack of alternatives.
The use of buy now, pay later (BNPL) services among millennials ranged from 19% to 23% between February and April 2026, with usage extending to essential goods like groceries. This indicates a shift toward using payment tools for managing expense timing rather than solely for financing large purchases.
In-store transaction data shows that debit cards were used for 43% to 47% of purchases, while credit cards accounted for 25% to 27%. Apple Pay usage for recent in-store transactions ranged from 11% to 15%, though 27% to 29% of millennials with compatible devices did not utilize the service.
Millennials actively manage their finances through various digital tools. Approximately 52% manually transfer funds into emergency savings, and 60% to 65% utilize payroll deductions for retirement. Financial institutions are encouraged to integrate real-time payments into these existing financial management workflows.
