Honda is reportedly planning to expand its global vehicle lineup by introducing a pickup truck based on the Mitsubishi Triton. The project is expected to result in the first deliveries by 2028, with an initial launch targeted at Southeast Asian markets.
The agreement would leverage Mitsubishi's existing ladder-frame chassis, allowing Honda to enter the utility vehicle segment without the high costs of independent development. Mitsubishi currently manufactures the Triton at its factory in Thailand, where this arrangement could improve production utilization.
The collaboration may extend beyond a single truck model. Reports indicate that Honda is considering sourcing additional vehicles from Mitsubishi and exploring joint development of cabin components, such as instrument clusters and display systems.
This initiative follows ongoing cooperation talks between Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi. While merger discussions between Honda and Nissan concluded in February 2025, the companies continue to collaborate on core technologies for software-defined vehicles.
