On September 17, Google released the Android 17 QPR1 update for Pixel 11 series devices during the Pixel Drop event. This update introduces new features such as expanded Material 3 Expressive effects, improved multitasking, and optimized media controls.
GrapheneOS reports that Android 17 QPR1 is the first version since Android 3.x Honeycomb to introduce new developer APIs without making them immediately available via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). These APIs are expected to reach AOSP only with the QPR2 release, scheduled for December.
The project also claims that Google is prioritizing security patches for Pixel devices while delaying their release to the broader Android security bulletin. Other manufacturers may not receive these critical fixes until the QPR2 update in December 2026, creating a significant delay in security parity.
GrapheneOS criticized Google for failing to meet its GPL open-source obligations. The team stated that they requested source code for a specific Pixel version on September 1, 2026, but did not receive access for several weeks. This delay hinders the ability of GrapheneOS to push updates, even after completing the necessary adaptations.
