Google has introduced a new system-level password manager migration feature for Android. This update allows users to transfer credentials between different password management applications without the need to download files or export data as unencrypted text.
The new process simplifies the transition by automatically detecting existing password managers on the device. Users can initiate the transfer by selecting the import option within their new application, which then prompts the system to move both traditional passwords and passkeys securely.
The migration process is designed to be completed in a few seconds. Google states that this feature addresses previous limitations where passkeys could not be transferred, forcing users to recreate them manually across websites and applications.
At launch, the functionality is compatible with Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. Google plans to expand support to additional password management applications in the future.
