Google has launched a streamlined process for migrating credentials between password managers on Android devices. This update eliminates the need for users to export and import sensitive data via CSV files, which reduces security risks associated with handling unencrypted files.
The new system allows for the direct transfer of both traditional passwords and passkeys between applications. To initiate the process, users select the import option within their new manager app. The Android operating system then identifies the existing manager on the device and facilitates the secure data exchange.
Users maintain control over the migration by reviewing the data before final approval. The feature is currently compatible with Google’s own password manager, as well as third-party services including 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane. Google plans to expand support to additional providers.
The functionality is available on all devices operating on Android 8 or newer versions. By enabling direct passkey migration, the tool ensures that users do not need to reconfigure their authentication settings when switching between different security applications.
