Google has introduced a new Android feature for transferring credentials between password managers. This system eliminates the need for manual CSV file exports, which previously posed security risks by exposing sensitive data in plain text during the migration process.
The new mechanism is based on the Credential Exchange standard, which enables secure and standardized data transfers between applications. Users can now migrate both traditional passwords and passkeys directly between services, ensuring that authentication data remains synchronized without requiring manual re-registration.
The process is initiated within the new password manager app, where the Android system identifies and coordinates the data transfer from the previous service. Users can review the data before confirming the migration with a few clicks, significantly simplifying the transition between different providers.
Initial support for this feature includes Google’s own password manager along with Bitwarden, 1Password, and Dashlane. Google plans to expand the list of compatible third-party applications as more developers adopt the Credential Exchange standard.
The functionality is not limited to the latest Android versions; it is compatible with devices running Android 8 and higher. This broad accessibility allows a wide range of users to switch between password management services without the burden of complex manual data handling.
