Google has officially confirmed that it will phase out ChromeOS updates by mid-2034. This decision aligns with previously documented plans and marks the transition path for existing Chromebook users toward the new Googlebook operating system.
According to a support document for IT administrators, many newer Chromebook models will be eligible for migration to the Googlebook OS. While specific device lists are not yet available, Google intends to provide direct migration paths for hardware that would have otherwise received support beyond 2034.
The Googlebook OS will follow a ten-year update and security patch cycle, calculated from the release date of the device's central processor. Google plans to launch device management features for the new platform in the second half of 2027.
The transition will require new licensing agreements, as existing Chrome Education and Enterprise licenses will not be compatible with Googlebook. Google has not yet disclosed the specific terms or pricing for these new licensing arrangements.
The Googlebook interface is designed to resemble the Android system more closely than ChromeOS. Despite this shift, Google confirmed it will continue to support web developers by maintaining application programming interfaces and ensuring web app manageability for IT administrators.
