Google has officially confirmed that select existing Chromebook models will be eligible for an upgrade to the new Googlebook OS. The company released documentation on September 23, 2024, outlining these plans, although specific device compatibility and the exact rollout timeline remain undisclosed.

The transition to Googlebook OS is intended for many of the latest Chromebook devices. Google stated that further details regarding the update process will be shared in the future. The new operating system is built on an Android-based technology stack while retaining its foundation in Chrome OS.

In addition to consumer updates, Google is developing comprehensive enterprise management features for the Googlebook platform. The company expects to launch these corporate-focused tools in the second half of 2027, expanding the utility of the new product line for business environments.

The first five Googlebook laptops, produced by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, were announced earlier this month. Pre-orders for these devices began recently, with the official retail launch scheduled for October 4. These initial models are the first to ship with the Googlebook OS pre-installed.
