Google has officially transitioned its gaming development platform for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS from the testing phase to general availability. Developers can now submit and distribute car-specific games directly through the Google Play Store to reach real users.
The company has implemented strict safety protocols for these applications. Games must detect the vehicle's status and are permitted to run only when the car is parked. This measure ensures that drivers cannot interact with games while the vehicle is in motion, prioritizing road safety.
The expansion covers both Android Auto, which relies on a connected smartphone, and Android Automotive OS, which operates directly on the vehicle's infotainment system. This move aims to provide a unified development environment, reducing the need for custom software for each manufacturer.
As automotive hardware performance improves, Google intends to integrate cars into the broader Android ecosystem. By allowing developers to bypass limited internal testing, the company expects a significant increase in the variety of entertainment and service content available to users during stationary periods.
