Google is currently developing a new feature for its Pixel smartphone lineup called Face Active Illumination. This functionality aims to enhance the performance of the device's facial recognition system in low-light conditions by utilizing the screen's light to illuminate the user's face.
Evidence of this development was discovered within the code of the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 system. The feature is designed to increase screen brightness during the authentication process, which should improve both the speed and reliability of unlocking the device when ambient light is insufficient.
The system will include a specific setting to manage brightness levels for this illumination feature. While the project is still in the early stages of development, reports suggest that Google is also exploring infrared technology, which may lead to more advanced facial scanning hardware in future Pixel models.
