Google has introduced native support for Markdown files within Google Drive and Google Docs. Users can now preview, edit, and collaborate on files with .md and .markdown extensions directly without needing to convert them into standard Google Docs format. The original formatting is preserved throughout the editing process.
The Google Drive interface now renders Markdown elements such as headers, tables, lists, and links. Users can toggle between the raw source code and the formatted preview. When a file is opened in Docs, a specific .md indicator appears next to the title, and all real-time collaboration and commenting features remain fully functional.
The rollout of this feature began on October 5 and is expected to reach all Google Workspace customers and personal account holders within 15 days. No manual activation by administrators or users is required to access these new capabilities.
Google noted that some advanced Docs features are not supported for Markdown files. Elements like smart chips may be converted to plain text or links, while HTML code will be rendered as plain text. Additionally, custom font colors, highlights, and text alignment settings will not be preserved when working with Markdown.
