Google Cloud has made Spanner queues generally available, allowing developers to integrate transactional messaging directly into the Spanner distributed database. This feature enables database updates and task queuing to occur within a single atomic commit, eliminating the need for external message brokers.
The new functionality supports atomic enqueue operations, scheduled delivery, and exactly-once processing semantics. Messages are stored as rows within database tables, which allows developers to query, join, and filter them using standard SQL. The system inherits Spanner's existing consistency guarantees and high availability.
By consolidating messaging infrastructure into the database, Google aims to simplify event-driven and agentic architectures. This approach ensures that AI agents can update records and trigger follow-up tasks as a single unit, preventing workflow stalls. Attio is among the firms currently utilizing this feature.
The release follows a broader expansion of Spanner's capabilities, which recently added support for vector search, graph models, and integrations with LangChain and Gemini. Additionally, Google introduced Spanner Omni on October 1, 2026, to provide more flexible deployment options for enterprise users.
