Google has officially confirmed that ChromeOS will cease receiving updates and security support by mid-2034. The operating system, which launched in 2011, will be succeeded by the new Googlebook OS platform. This timeline aligns with information previously disclosed in legal documents earlier this year.

For devices with a ten-year support lifecycle extending beyond 2034, Google plans to offer a migration path to Googlebook OS. Many newer Chromebooks are expected to be compatible with this transition, allowing them to receive software updates for the remainder of their support period. Specific details regarding eligible models and migration procedures remain forthcoming.

Google intends to roll out management features for Googlebook devices in the enterprise and education sectors starting in the second half of 2027. Existing Chrome Education and Enterprise upgrade licenses will not carry over to the new platform. Organizations will need to adopt a new licensing system, though pricing and commercial terms have not yet been disclosed.

The Googlebook OS architecture will shift closer to the Android ecosystem while maintaining support for web applications. New Googlebook devices will follow a ten-year update cycle based on processor release dates. While Googlebook devices are available for pre-order with a launch scheduled for October 4, the transition marks a significant shift for the company's laptop product line.
