Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) has confirmed that its G CELLS achieved 1,000 charge and discharge cycles in six minutes without any loss in performance. The testing was completed by October 7, 2026, using 1.5 Ah pouch cells manufactured at the Battery Innovation Center in Indiana.
The G CELLS are aluminum-ion batteries that do not contain lithium or rare earth elements. GMG is developing this technology in collaboration with Rio Tinto. The cells were tested at a 7 C rate, while previous benchmarks involved testing at 10 C. For comparison, a lithium titanate oxide (LTO) cell lost 20% of its capacity after only 82 cycles when tested at 10 C.
During testing at a 10 C rate, the G CELLS demonstrated a specific energy of 58 Wh/kg, marking a 48% improvement over previous data. The cells also achieved 94% energy efficiency during the six-minute cycle, significantly outperforming the 64% efficiency recorded for LTO cells. GMG is now prioritizing the improvement of energy density and scaling to larger cell formats.
Craig Nicol, CEO of GMG, noted that the G CELLS lasted approximately ten times longer than comparable LTO cells under identical charging conditions. The company continues to refine its technology to address barriers to the adoption of electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
